Why I don’t want an ebike (but I don’t hate them)

Coming soon to a trail near you…

I was passed by two dudes on electric unicycles on the Cumby climbing trail last Saturday, one of them rocking loud music through a bluetooth speaker.

Now that’s just offside.

Part of me though appreciates the desire to play your tunes while doing your activity outdoors, but at least have the decency to be able to mute your tunes when others are around.

I believe the EUC's on the trail are offside. The bluetooth speaker on the trails is just straight up annoying.

I'm sorta on the fence about euc's. In some ways they cause less trail damage than a bike and they look hella fun, but they are fully motorized which creates the potential for conflict. Like anything in a perfect world, if people used them responsibly then there'd be no need for any fuss. The speaker thing is perspective - awesome by those using it and a piss-off from those who aren't. I generally frown on "sharing" music in public spaces as it's inconsiderate, just stating that I get the desire to do so. It opens up an interesting psychology rabbit hole in terms of what drives people to do certain things that many others find annoying or in bad taste. Similar to the question of why do such a small percentage of riders engage in supporting the trail via time (advocacy/maintenance) or money even though it's in their own best interests to do so?

Saw/heard a guy in WBP this summer with a bluetooth speaker strapped with ski straps to the bottom of his top tube.

When I've gone into mountainous terrain I have played music out of phones speaker; but I'm the only one around and I want to keep it that way.

The Bluetooth speaker is annoying everywhere! Listen to it in solitude or use headphones! That's what they were designed for.

So I occasionally ride with a Bluetooth speaker as I prefer it to a earphone.

I’ve asked hikers how they feel about it and their response has been basically universal: “i don’t like em but I didn’t even know it was going until you were close enough to talk actually. All good”

So maybe, just maybe, like with almost all the other things we do around people, there’s a considerate way to do things and an inconsiderate way to do the same thing.

I think a lil speaker for the road climbs would be great!  Not the biggest fan of ear buds.
