Nice bike. Welcome to the "club". Two things tho: Hardtail gives one the advantage over hinged frames. And the frame will outlast the king headset, or at least be it's last home - if you want it to.

I haven't built a complete bike yet. I haven't welded a whole frame, just parts. I haven't stamped out a chain. I've machined almost every other part, including work on molds for grips and brake pads. Haven't made tires tubes or spokes either. I guess I'm 9 out of 10. I'm super impressed with you 10 for tenners.

Good stuff here, but there's so much more. How 'bout leverage and gear inches? Bigger wheels = more gear inches for the same ratio. Also, I've heard that you get more traction because you have less leverage - like starting out in second gear in your car on the snow/ice. I think there are 2 or 3 more articles here Keith. It's winter now, lots of time to write. Right?

What size? 31.8 or 35? With all these new standards, you gotta know so that you can get the right stem for it.

A grain of salt with which to take the bike industry.

The best I've ever had.  Very good.  Not cheap.  It's from 2018.  No CSU creak at all yet.  I have it at just under 60 pounds.  Never bottom out.  It gets professionally re done each year, tuned by Ben Arnot at Alba.  I ride many things, but not all, in Whistler.  I enjoy blue trails the most, but it will do anything.  Most savage ride this summer was 1199.  I even did a Revy bike park day on it.  (Then a bunch of Boundary) Favourite ride was Lord of the Squirrels combo.

My brother’s Optic is pretty close to my Rootdown. Geometrywise.

Norco Optic is also similar.

My hubs need service about every 7 or 8 years. Standards change faster than that. So, I don't service them at all. I will buy new ones.

I just sold a 99 Ranger 3.0L 4wd. To a guy in town here. I sold it because 400,000 km. But it is still on the road getting the guy around. I replaced with 2004 Ranger Edge 2wd with a mere 200,000 km. New one gets waaaaay better gas mileage. Both single cab. You gotta think of this like a motorcycle. You can take a lunch, or a passenger in the cab. If both, one has to go in the back. A small lunch could go behind the seat. I bought another one because they are good trucks. And small like a car in the city.

Is the new ranger a unibody? Like the Avalanche and Ridgeline? No more body on frame I think.

We haven't changed the profile of our teeth from the old days. Still ASME/ANSI B29.1M sprocket tooth profile for sprockets with roller chains. Straight out of Machinery's Handbook.

You should come up for some riding in a couple months when the snow's gone. Some not the park riding.
