In bounds I have salomon fks that I run at 12 (their min setting) and I never release. I also have a pair of Duke that I have set at 11. Funny enough, the first day I got them I set them at 8 because a buddy told me that 11 was way too high for an old fuck like me and and that I was going to kill my knees (again). I lost a ski after three turn at speed before dropping in a couloir and crashed hard. Went back up to 11 now and I m fine. Backcountry I have a pair of atk raider 12. I run them @ 11 which I is fine so far. I still lock them down when the snow is really icy/bumpy of if I want to do a hard run. I never pop out so far with them but I only had maybe 20 days on them.
I had some Plum before and experienced weird release, also with Dynafit . I remember three particular case.
Once was cutting back on some sluff, both boots poped right away. I think it was direct side loading at the toes. The two other one was once in a bumpy trail run in the trees. Thank god I was not going too fast and manage to avoid the trees. The last one was on very hard cardboard and same thing it just pop because too much vibrations… These one scared the shit out of me cause even if I was that fast I went head and back first into a tree. I got lucky and my backpack/helmet took most of the impact. Really got me thinking on the consequence of loosing a ski.
They only have a few mm of release stroke vs 10+ for alpine clamps, in other words a single brief high impact will make you release. Simple as that.
I am way more afraid of loosing my skis at a weird spot that not releasing.

If you see ski anywhere close the "aggressively" adjectives in bound with Tech Toe binding I think you are at risks…
The Toes have basically no retention whatsovever (regardless of the brand but the beast of dynafit maybe). So if you like at charging at speed on those icy/bumpy groomers it s only a question of time when you ll find one of your ski flying right on your next left left turn. There is a lot of nasty trees waiting for you on either side of the slope usually :).
I still see every guys (myself included) locking down toes when stuff get serious (really steep and/or hard).
Stay with a frame binding if you want to ski resort safely (Tyrolia, Marker, Salomon). Trekkers are perfect in the resort, used them for years.
For touring, nothing beat ATK these days. http://www.atkrace.it/?lang=en
They are kind hard to find in north america but the quality is through the roof. I have the older version of the raider 12. Looks like the new Raider 14 got everything you can dream of. (The brakes works!). And, no, I wouldn t used them in bounds ;)
Have fun this winter
Thanks for sharing your experiences.
I was pretty surprised too to learn that I had no more ligaments and still was able to do everything fine. I just picked up again tennis two years ago and was starting to be pretty competitive. My ankle always felt stable also it did rolled a bit from time to time. I was more concerned about my Achilles at one point actually!
I rolled my ankle running full speed downhill in a trail covered with thick leaves. I guess the perfect terrain for such injury.
I m getting older (almost 40 now …) and start feeling it a bit. My right knee recovered quite well functionally from the ACL surgery and meniscus repair. Still, I feel it after every hard day pushing it. Seems like my ankle is going to go the same way. Oh well.
I still have time before deciding. My ski boots are holding just fine!
Hi, I m wondering if anyone here went through this:
I rolled my ankle trail running. Nothing too extreme, standard swell and the usual hint of yellow and fushia skin coloring, a bit of bone bruising too.
Nevertheless, this time I was in France and had fast free access to MRI, so the doc prescribed me one after I told him that I shredded my ankle to pieces 6 years ago mountain biking in whistler and did nothing but wait for the healing process.
Imagery shows all the lateral tendons and ligaments completely torned :(
The doc advised me to get surgery to reattach the whole thing together.
On the other hand, I manage to live quite well without them. I was climbing, playing tennis, hockey, biking, skiing etc without issues.
I have fully recover now and I am in the middle of a great ski season.
I m thinking of booking the surgery in the spring, the doc says it is two month recovery which ain't too bad. I just wonder if it is really going to make a difference in the long run. If the only downside is to give up trail running I m not going to cry for long.
Any advice?
Best
airbag are very tempting but I m afraid that it might push you to take more risks than without it.
Remember that 30% of avy fatalities arises before even being buried.
Heavy snow will crush you, the sluff can take you over a cliff or you can hit a tree etc etc.
The boots looks cool for mountaineering but likely way too soft for aggressive skiing…
I am part of the infinite immovable space time continuum.
I was never born and will never die.
Or maybe I ll get hit by a bubble world expanding from a quantum string fluctuation
and here, ok I ll die.
Or if I slid on dog poo and crush my skull, I would die from shame here too
Season is starting, so let s open a new thread on the topic.
Julie-Ann Chapman had already started posting ride reports.

On a personal side, we planning to take a lot of time off to go explore the pemby icecap/hurley in january with a buddy. The goal is to go snow camping/hut up there, ski some sweet lines and have fun. We are really experienced in the backcountry but still pretty green (2 season so far) with the sleds (one M7, one M8). We ll be looking for guys to join us as we quickly found it that is way safer to get a larger crew when going deep with sleds. Post here or PM me if you are interested.
Have fun, be safe.
first wave is coming, hope it stays that way

+1 for the inserts.
It works and it is not that long to swap the bindings between different pairs of skis.
