Did the Death Race in Grand Cache a few weeks ago (on a relay team).

One participant fell on her bear spray and punctured it.  She got covered, as did a bunch of folks after her.  It was crazy wet so it soaked her cloths and she had to run for about an hour to an aid station. She said it was like being on fire.

They couldn't let her in the medical tent as she was off gassing nastiness - so she had to be stripped in the parking lot and lubed up with dish detergent.

I don't think I'll ride with bear spray anymore.

I have no idea why anyone would think it necessary in an event like the death race- about a thousand people are on the trail with you - if you are the "one" chosen to be ate by the barr ... it is just your time.

I think it should be basically catch and release.  Works with the fishes. 

All "trophy hunting" should be done with a paintball gun and a gopro.

Wrt grizzly bears - it would make it more sporting would it not?  Get your shot, get your vid, and see if you get out with your life.

I couldn't help but reflect on para 51 coming from an expert on the subject.  I often fail to mind the gap.

[51] Mr. Pendrel opined that there was a gap between the skill levels that mountain bikers perceive they have, and the skill levels they actually possess. In his view, the industry general accepts that gap exists. He stated that while ability classifications (beginner, sport, intermediate, expert and elite) have been in existence for a long time in the sport, they rely on riders to self-assess their ability. He further noted that mountain biking terrain varies widely in different parts of the world, and even within Canada. He opined that a rider in Ontario might race competitively in an expert class, but struggle with an intermediate trail in British Columbia.

I did somewhat chuckle at the Ontario burn though.

So I picked up the bars.  A friend was taking them off her bike because they were too wide for her.

Turns out that they are 780.  One lap in - they seem very wide. While I am a swarthy, thick chested, wide shoulder'd fella at 5'9 - they may be too wide. I think I'll ride with them a bit and then decide if I cut them down at all.

Can I just move grips, controls etc inboard 10mm on each side to try the feel of 760mm - or do I have to buck them off for the right feel?

Thanks all - I will have to pony up some $ - but not much.

I just look at 30mm and think to myself - man that isn't very much.  How can 1.5cm on each end really make a difference.

I love my 2015 Giant Trance, although the 730mm bar feels a little xc for my purposes.  I went to a 780 on my dh bike and love it.

I have a chance to trade up to a 760mm Race Face Turbine (which comes with a 50mm stem to replace the 70mm I have now) - and I am wondering if 30mm is really worth the trouble (all be it not much trouble - but I am very lazy)?

Any sage advices greatly appreciated.
