I have heard that there may be some mental health issues going on…not excusing the behaviour just wondering where people are getting their info cause i can't find any!

Sounds like a great life to me. Relationships, life, careers, family, friends etc rarely ever turn out the way we want them to. even if from outside it looks like everything is "in order".

I know many married people with kids, the 'right job' and NO passion. For anything.
That's no life.
So best to just live.

I have to say i'm kinda surprised that safety for trail users wasn't an explicit focus. Given the increase in trail usage (esp for the instagram-popular ones) and the crazy number of NSR calls every year, usually from grossly unprepared hikers heading into backcountry, safety should be a priority.

Thanks everyone! Will look into rentals...at least for one day. Then can assess whether I want to keep it for two.

Heading to Silverstar in a few weeks. I currently ride a Trek Fuel EX 8 29er all mountain with 120mm front and back. We'll be riding 1.5 days and was told I could ride my Trek but I was thinking of renting a DH bike for a day? 

I have no idea what the trails are like and only have Whistler bike park as a comparison, which obvs DH bike is best. 

Style of riding isn't super aggressive...i like fast flowy with some tech but nothing crazy. 

Any thoughts??

Ya HSCT has a lot of snow until peak summer. In the past few years it's only been fully clear of snow in July-ish. You don't want to get caught up there post-holing your way along. Will take forever and it already takes about 10h if you're fit. If it's hot out and it's been a dry summer, be sure to bring LOTS of water.  I know of a few people who 'ran out'. :o

I've done a bunch of long backcountry trail runs/adventures (Hanes, Coliseum, Needles etc) but haven't been able to make it out to HSCT with folks I run with because of scheduling. Hopefully this year! It's my main running/hiking goal for 2018...

going down to bellingham in a few weeks and looking for route suggestions about 2-4h in length and for 'intermediate' level by North Shore/Squamish/Whistler standards.

some nice answers here wrt post-workout meals!

there is nothing wrong with carbs…but not all carbs are made equal! junk is junk and eventually that catches up with you. it's ok in a pinch once in awhile but as sarensho mentioned, going from super low to super high blood sugar can lead to diabetes by messing with your hormone/insulin system. the impact of a complex carb vs a single sugar is significant.

i study nutrition and am an avid runner/cycler. my approach is usually:
night before: meal based on complex carbs (yams, whole grains and starchy and non-starchy veg) with easily digest lean protein (fish or small amount lean chicken/beef cuts)
morning of (mix complex and simple carbs, protein and fats): smoothie with lots of frozen berries, banana, avocado, whey protein, hemp seeds, turmeric, ginger etc
during ride/run: simpler carbs - figs, dates, other dried fruit and if it's a long day nuts, lara bars or a few chews.
1-2h after: mix protein and simple carbs
night meal: protein and complex carbs and some good fats - probably also a treat! this is the time to eat it!

i've found as my training level increases i crave sugars more and if i don't eat the good ones i resort to junk! so i up my fruit snacks during the week and complex carbs in general.

It doesn't matter where beef comes from, it's still bad for the environment. You can claim it is grass fed and organic, but its no different than what you buy at Safeway.

Just don't buy beef. Hunt or eat wild game if you really need to consume meat.

(I'm not a vegetarian, but I rarely eat beef)

it totally matters whether it's factory corn-fed or grassfed both for the quality of the meat and the environmental footprint. i can send you peer-reviewed articles if you like. i study this.
also, being vegan/veg does not = no footprint. it's all about quality unless of course you are talking animal rights.

best to let people make their own decisions and not say things like "don't". because we're all guilty of environmental footprints whether it's beef consumption, driving, or turning the light on.
