Oh, Mike and the long-cherished team of NSMB.....thank you for this gem of an article. Nothing more to add, except....that it is oh so true. 

My own mortality and the fact that I am turning 50 next year has brought me to not only buying my kid a DJ but getting myself a BMX for an indoor park and a foam pit. 

Long live having the balls of having the ability to be wrong and ok with it, and not having to prove anything to anybody, except they are wrong, of course.

I come from a bmx/skateboarding background (beginning to end of 80s) before I started to ride those first mountainbikes. It all comes down to automatisms, those ingrained and well-practised movement patterns that help the mind and body relax. It needs constant practise and refinement, and the odd crash or two, yes - but it is nothing out of the ordinary. 

Then again, no one has to ride techy lines or go full-send mode. That is the beauty of biking. Do whatever feels good and true. And scare yourself a little or a lot sometimes or often. Live and ride to the fullest.

My exact thoughts, from what I have heard about the levers and seen happening to the plastic I am in no mood of trying that one. I am still remembering the old Gustav M fondly...and am really wondering why Magura had to produce a completely new brake with this carbotexture stuff.

I definitely let you know once he got it. Am waiting for the delivery myself. Sooo excited.

That book is a really great idea, ordered it a few days ago.... My son is turning 10 in two weeks, he loves riding his mountain bike...he is not a native speaker of English but reaally curious and open....and loves good stories and pictures.

Now I need to check them out. 

Oh....and I still rock a pair of Roach pants in dark blue where the knees are like in indigo. Almost look like a normal pair of pants. A bit baggy but still awesome. Bought them at the original Cove in 2001 I think. Had a few seams replaced by a professional. Can not kill them.

Riding in pants is wesome. I bought a Fox race pants two seasons ago, and it was such an eye-opener. Riding regularly in them, but am a bit worried about crashing in them. The material seems to be easy to tear, are the Royal race pants any different? Guess these are the ones that the 50 to 1 are wearing.

For an alien civilization to hang in there and not destroy themselves before developing the technology to harness infinite energy seems... impossible. 

Hell, our species is already rushing towards the edge and we just now accomplished space travel to our own moon.

Climate denial→the total decline of our species, with the pedal to the metal. That seems our likely scenario.

The ignorant among us becoming enlightened and staying that way long enough for our us to develop the technology to harness infinite energy to travel at light speed to other civilizations seems...a long shot.

Don't see why anyone else would have done much better.

Just by playing around with some scenarious could lead to some interesting ideas....imagine a society on a planet far, far away way smarter than what homo sapiens has done in the last few hundred years. What is happening to our environment is not like physics, it is not a given - it just happened because quite a few people thought (and still do) that exploiting the ressources while wrecking everything and burning fossil fuels like there is no tomorrow are good ideas. I think that is a fallacy. The destruction of the ecosystem as a whole is the sum of many coincidences, quite a few of which have to do with one monotheistic religion and capitalism, put truly simple. 

Who says that different life forms would make the same decisions?  There are even smarter life forms on earth

Agriculture is big business, the bigger the farm, the bigger the fields and the crop, whether corn or wheat, even dairy farms have grown significantly - all while the farmers are making less money, at least over here in my area.

Thank god, this info does not really collide with my hop intake in the evening....

I don't have enough free time to do all the bike riding I want.

You have to remember that forest fires are actually normal, and they put valuable nutrients back in the soil that the foliage takes up.  Obviously, the visuals are disturbing and the effects profound, but NO fires of any kind would have a far worse implication, especially long term.  Funny everyone wishes to link it to climate change, but if you go back in history, and I mean thousands of years (with evidence from ice core samples) you will notice that the temperature of the earth was hotter in the past, by a few degrees.  No cars, humans or volcanic activity to correlate the rise in temperature with.  There is more to it than CO2 and humans, although I agree we have  an affect, but in a more unmeasurable way than you might think.  Not all of us are worshippers of St. Greta.

Not sure, I'd rather guess Polymath is dead serious, at least that is what I understood by his use of "worshippers of St Greta", call it sarcasm or just inapropriate rhetorics. 

How people can still use "arguments" like the above after decades of hard science is beyond me, given the additional fact that the oil companies knew in the 1970s that an ongoing burning of fossile fuels would result in a human-caused change of climate on earth.

Double amputee had to be shot because he was wielding a knife, after each headline I think I can not be shocked...but then something new is happening. Odd that there are never headlines in which white US Americans get shot by the police, or strangled to death, or beaten to death.

To be honest these articles are more about creating fear using a small segment of the athletic population. Reality is majority of us age grouper athletes will never reach the weekly and yearly activity level and volume they do. So while it is concerning that this is happening to the the high performance small percentage of athletes for the majority of us all it does is create fear. And also increases the chances of those who are trying to be active of becoming less because they are afraid.

Reality is a lot of death in the age grouper crowd come from another source. Which ironically barely see mention of it anywhere.

Food and beverages.

I am not so sure about the creation of fear, heart-attacks and risks of heart related diseases are real, I think reality is a little more complex than this. It generates traffic for the other site, people talk about it, people maybe start to think and adapt their lifestyle or training, and voila, more care is going to be taken. 

I have no data to support the theory that in untrained or "pastime athletes" the risk of heart issues is present and a danger as well. Maybe that is a task for Syncro?

I think I saw an article about this in Bike, and then asked the guy at Cove about it when I came to visit from Ontario in 2000, looking at universities (I ended up at UVic).  He said there's always more trails. 

While the content is unfortunate, I like these memories.  I don't even have a working bike anymore, but there was a time when I was on this site multiple times daily.

That is a major bummer....go get that fixed.

I understand the mechanisms behind such event, but one part of my brain is still amazed at the level of no-brain, can we call it unbrainery (?), of the people trying to do this, same with MAGA and what was tried in Berlin, Germany (which failed utterly, did not even make it past the first steps, lol).

Kind of like the people who think that Joe Biden is not really Joe Biden but a bunch of actors.
