I'm sure wear tear from 30+myears of standing at work played a part.

Fortunately since it was at work WCB kicked in , I had MRI and surgery within 3 months however swelling was considerable and has taken a very long time to go away and knee still feels like crap when standing for extended periods. The surgery was 25% meniscusectomy , debraiding and scraping , yuck .I have been going to physio religiously (except the last month since I caught pneumonia from someone there somehow) .

MY ligaments are in good shape and I have I now have a custom CTI knee brace (matching the my left knee lol) but I have been deemed partly disable through wcb etc ! The knee still feels crappy though I can ride my bike mostly seated without much problem , although I have been only riding climbing trails and xc stuff so I don't wreck it worse.

Anybody have meniscus surgery and what was your experience. Mostly did it get better ? How long?

Thanks

Erik

Would add since your back riding. Do not be afraid to change any part of your bike set up as injuries and surgery can change both how you ride and how things feel on the bike with the new physical realities. Reality is unless your planning on entering the BC Powerlifting Championships don't worry about that standard. And reality is using squats as the exercise there is so many things that effect a persons ability to squat. How our joints developed from birth can effect how we squat and ROM. Add in injuries or health conditions can effect that as well.

Also in terms of sports it depends on the sport and it's requirements that need to be considered when should you do deep squats or do just to parallel to benefit you. Now in terms of general fitness...simple parallel or box squat height because reality that is the standard height for alot of what we use daily..toilets, bed, dining room chairs, park benches.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uYybq-Mq6A

Posted by syncro - Sept. 26, 2022, 8:06 p.m. Tue, 27 Sep 2022 03:06:34 +0000https://nsmb.com/forum/forum/health-and-fitness-23/topic/thinking-about-body-mechanics-and-mtbing-part-1-132523/Health and Fitness • Reasons to eat polyphenolshttps://nsmb.com/forum/forum/health-and-fitness-23/topic/reasons-to-eat-polyphenols-132501/

Posted by: Hepcat

Explains why vegans are so fucking wired all the time.

Hahahahaha....that is gold.

Posted by syncro - Sept. 9, 2022, 6:59 a.m. Fri, 09 Sep 2022 13:59:50 +0000https://nsmb.com/forum/forum/health-and-fitness-23/topic/reasons-to-eat-polyphenols-132501/Health and Fitness • Something better than squats?https://nsmb.com/forum/forum/health-and-fitness-23/topic/something-better-than-squats-132457/
I've been a fan of weighted step-ups for a long time, although they've never been my primary exercise for a few reasons - mainly powerlifting and ego. I found through trial and error that I was able to ride with it within a week, I just kept it taped to the next toe and put my shoe really tight. Basically, anything that didn't hurt seemed OK, anything that hurt, I avoided. This strategy worked for me, the toe healed up fine eventually.

Posted by JBV2 - July 25, 2016, 8:46 p.m. Tue, 26 Jul 2016 03:46:21 +0000https://nsmb.com/forum/forum/health-and-fitness-23/topic/broken-toes-554/Health and Fitness • I feel healthy after watching this.https://nsmb.com/forum/forum/health-and-fitness-23/topic/i-feel-healthy-after-watching-this-390/
https://youtu.be/WRD_JSg0PQQ

Posted by Buster-Bluth - Sept. 14, 2016, 11:26 a.m. Wed, 14 Sep 2016 18:26:45 +0000https://nsmb.com/forum/forum/health-and-fitness-23/topic/i-feel-healthy-after-watching-this-390/Health and Fitness • Healthy eatinghttps://nsmb.com/forum/forum/health-and-fitness-23/topic/healthy-eating-5484/

Posted by: Hepcat

"The Game Changers" on Netflix is an interesting watch so far, about veganism and athletics.

"How can you be as strong as an ox without eating meat?"

"Have you ever seen an ox eat meat?" The study included lifters who used human growth hormone and/or IGF-1 in addition to steroids. Their average FFMI was 26.2.
Pope’s research also shows the clearest difference between users and non-users. Steroids preferentially increase the size of the muscles that attach to the shoulder joints: the lats, trapezius, pectorals, deltoids, and upper arms. (Interestingly, that’s also where steroid-induced acne is most likely to appear.) A guy who’s “yoked,” with traps big enough to support their own ecosystems, almost certainly had pharmaceutical assistance.

Posted by JBV2 - Dec. 20, 2016, 3:21 p.m. Tue, 20 Dec 2016 23:21:14 +0000https://nsmb.com/forum/forum/health-and-fitness-23/topic/steriods-148/Health and Fitness • Skate skiinghttps://nsmb.com/forum/forum/health-and-fitness-23/topic/skate-skiing-129827/
Managed to drag the wife up to Hollyburn x/c area last Sunday for some classic shuffling. Stuffed it into a hiking pack, now I look like a jack ass quick marching my fat ass through the hilliest neighborhoods in Calgary, up and down the elbow valley wall for 5-7 km at a go.

Rough calculations tell me that my fat + the added weight = 800 calories / hour, and I'm just adding more weight as I lose it, in 10 lb increments. Once I'm back at my fighting weight, I'll use it as resistance until I reach a total of 200 lb packs. I was in the best shape of my life when I was building trails out there on the coast… I'm guessing the chainsaws, shovels, pails of nails, etc being packed up mountain faces helped a fair amount, clued in that military style rucking was probably as close to a replication as I can get without spending the time actually building trail, as long as I follow the rule of doing pushups or situps every mile.

I sometimes do weighted walks with a max of 20 kg, but only if I am well rested and I feel like doing it. Hand size can be a limiting factor in being able to grip the bar tightly enough over multiple reps. If your hands are small, you could try your luck with a smaller diameter bar (eg. 'women's' oly bar.)

If you hands are of 'normal' proportions, here are some random thoughts:
- 4x10 is getting into 'volume' rather than strength work. As the DL gets heavier (and it should if you want to get stronger) you will need to decrease volume as you will not be able to adequately recover from the effort. If you want to increase your grip strength, why not try heavier and for less reps? eg. 1 or 2 sets of 5 once per week? increasing the weight week on week. If you are able to hold on to a set of 5 400# Dl's, I'm betting a set of 10 at 250# will be less of a problem.
-hook grip the last set. The hook grip gets more comfortable the more you use it, but lets face it, never feels great.
-mixed grip last set - make sure you pay attention to the bar being pushed out from your mid-foot by the supine hand.
-Checking to see where you are placing the bar in your hand when you set up. If the bar slides down, then you may not have your hands properly seated. (This Mark Rippetoe vid about grip, might be of use, though not specifically about DL Grip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTqNSgCmM2s). You may also need to re-grip between sets. There is not law that says you have to keep your hands around the bar for the full 10 sets.
-There is no law that says you can't re-set between reps, and you should be doing so if shit is getting out of wack. The 1-2 second pause/reset may be enough to get your through your last reps.
-Straps are NOT the solution. Increasing your grip strength is one of the added benefits of deadlifting. In the absence of a wrist injury or some other reason (needing to save your grip for something else) straps shouldn't be used/needed.

hope that helps!

Posted by xcolin - March 11, 2015, 10:55 a.m. Wed, 11 Mar 2015 17:55:02 +0000https://nsmb.com/forum/forum/health-and-fitness-23/topic/deadliftslosing-grip-2671/Health and Fitness • Why I don't go to gyms anymore..https://nsmb.com/forum/forum/health-and-fitness-23/topic/why-i-dont-go-to-gyms-anymore-2812/

Not when they stand inside the rack or use the equipment as lounge furniture while checking their email and text messages …

No shit, eh? When people ask me how to get started I always advise them to find something fun that they want to do and do it a lot. When there's some payoff to the hard work be it on a bike, rock climbing, SUP, yoga, whatever, then it's more likely to become a habit. When one thing is fun then it's easier to make changes in other areas (i.e. going to the gym to do supplemental training, dietary changes) because they'll make that first thing even more fun.

TL;DR Use something fun as a stepping stone to a positive feedback loop.

Posted by enduramil - June 2, 2014, 1:37 p.m. Mon, 02 Jun 2014 20:37:22 +0000https://nsmb.com/forum/forum/health-and-fitness-23/topic/fitness-crazed-how-gym-owners-trainers-and-pseudo-science-keep-you-fat-4129/Health and Fitness • How Running and Endurance Training Can Shorten Your Lifehttps://nsmb.com/forum/forum/health-and-fitness-23/topic/how-running-and-endurance-training-can-shorten-your-life-4126/
Just a short anecdote: i am currently in berlin, came across an english bookstore, quite large for germany, and could not remember the title, and could not access internet and the board…sometimes there are times i wish i had a 'smartphone' and not only a smartass at times.

Posted by ReductiMat - June 2, 2014, 7:47 p.m. Tue, 03 Jun 2014 02:47:00 +0000https://nsmb.com/forum/forum/health-and-fitness-23/topic/how-running-and-endurance-training-can-shorten-your-life-4126/Health and Fitness • Jun/Jul/Aug 3mo Challengehttps://nsmb.com/forum/forum/health-and-fitness-23/topic/junjulaug-3mo-challenge-4135/
Deleted for lack of participation. see you on the trails!

Posted by TylerDurden - June 2, 2014, 9:08 a.m. Mon, 02 Jun 2014 16:08:47 +0000https://nsmb.com/forum/forum/health-and-fitness-23/topic/junjulaug-3mo-challenge-4135/Health and Fitness • How's your posture?https://nsmb.com/forum/forum/health-and-fitness-23/topic/hows-your-posture-4446/
Oh god, my posture is absolutely horrible.
I am always in slump mode.
I have tried guides like this. The question is different.

A battlefield in ancient Greece, China or during the Sengoku Jidai in Japan's "Middle Ages" before the long-lasting peace would have looked amazingly similar - cut people down, if not able to do so, grapple them, fight them with smaller weapons suitable fot close-quarters and finish them on the ground.

Funny thing is….in most so-called ko-ryu of Japan, for example, hand-to-hand combat was deemed the most difficult, after having mastered long staff, sword and short sword.

What is even more interesting are martial "artists" who think they have new answers to problems who have been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years, actually.

An artists in the martial ways for me would be someone along the lines of Picasso, Renoir, da Vinci, Cezanne, Giacommetti, Beuys and the like - creating someghing entirely new and unique such as the Gracie clan.

Most trainers I have met in the last thirty years were not.
