I’ve been running a job at UBC for the last few months. Wesbrook Mall rehab focused on bike/pedestrian upgrades. Seems to me to be a flaw in design in many areas, especially at the intersection of Wesbrook and Chancellor. Design has pedestrians and bikes crossing paths in several spots and seems like a recipe for collisions. From what I’ve witnessed so far is that all three user groups in this area seem very entitled and this should be interesting when we are done.

Been riding through this new "upgrade" work from the start. I have no idea how they are planning to put the old bike lane back in place going west. The sidewalk does this inverted round-about and creates a major pinch point. Are they planning on bikes using the new very large circle sidewalk?

Yes. Yikes. Pedestrian conflicts and confusion will rule.

I see stuff like this and the first thought that comes to mind is if the engineers on the project have any significant real world experience riding bicycles in urban settings with plenty of traffic and pedestrians around. Equally important is your particular bike fit and weight distribution. Height of handlebar in relation to the seat and the top tube length (all in relation to your personal dimensions) will impact how much weight is on your wrists.

Is your bar below the saddle? Are you stretched out, scrunched up or just right on your bike?

Finally, lowering the saddle and tilting it so it is level or sometimes slightly nose up can help shift weight backwards and take strain off your wrists.

Bigger tires and softer grips can definitely help. The only thing that comes close is the older Specialized tires with the Armadillo lining. I had trouble cutting through them with an Olfa knife when the rubber finally wore out after about 7000km's.
I get about 9000km's from the Conti's on the rear.
I've tried quite a few tires in the past 11 years going from Deep Cove to Vancouver. The usual suspect for flats for me is the 1.5" square tags from lumber ends that blow off and land with a staple pointing up. Also, the barrier on the West side yesterday looked like it was kicked over and was lying on the ground partially on the sidewalk. Not sure if it was actually open, but of course the posted closure times don't seem to account for anything, so just rode it, as did other riders. They need to get their act together if they don't want people riding on the bridge if it is really, really, really (or as Rob Ford says "super, super, super") closed. Online or advance warnings on each side would help … taking the west side to and from the east (North Burnaby) is about a 20 minute detour to my round trip bike commute.

Hope they don't do what has been done in the past with bridge work warnings on the sidewalk - flimsy, home-made paper signs taped up and then left there and not removed after work is ended. The safest place for a bike lane would be to the left of the right lane.

This could be an issue of observation bias. I have to say, based on what I have seen, I am inclined to agree with you. I have seen the bike lanes encourage some behaviour that I have never seen repeated on a shared road. One dude literally watching the sun set to his left nearly rode into me until I shouted at him, travelled 200-300 metres without looking forward. Countless others. However, the evidence doesn't seem to support it. I would guess the issue is that you remember the most obvious examples but on average, the people who are less experiences are probably going slower and have less accidents or have one and then stop. Who really knows.

I definitely am not a huge fan of bike lanes. In some areas they are necessary to maintain the flow of traffic (over bridges seems to be the best example) but in other areas, the lane has to end at some point which is usually at the time the cyclist is most at risk (an intersection).

Posted by shirk - June 10, 2013, 1:50 p.m. Mon, 10 Jun 2013 20:50:13 +0000https://nsmb.com/forum/forum/commuting-22/topic/vancouver-drivers-and-the-right-of-way-6988/Commuting • STOP STOP STOPhttps://nsmb.com/forum/forum/commuting-22/topic/stop-stop-stop-6657/

Cop: You failed to stop for that stop sign.
Me: Ya.
