Climbed up and rode it this weekend. Tons of work put into it. Not even recognizable as Ned's anymore in my opinion (which is either a good or a bad thing depending on your preference). A few janky moves still left on it, and man it was DRY. Some of those rock areas are getting pretty slick with the fine layer of dust on top. Kudos to the trail builders who put in all the work!

The east side trails are rideable on a trail bike, but more enjoyable on a DH or at least enduro bike as they are rough/fast (or at least they can be ridden fast, they are not slow/janky). Not really a good way to climb up. I prefer riding up the road at Cypress because it's not as steep as BLT, easier to sit and spin, but during ski season it sucks because of the traffic.

The BCIT Forest Society is also asking folks not to ride at the Woodlot.

FVRD has closed Sumas Mountain Regional Park (only the FVRD regional park trails are closed, so most MTB trails presently still open).

City of Mission has also closed Heritage Mountain trails; the closure of Red & Bear is part of full closure of the whole Mission Tree Farm, so access to Stave is limited to only those with campsite bookings or going to the boat launch.

If you are riding in snow, go to flat pedals, my winter riding boots clump up with ice on the sole, making it very difficult to clip in and hard to clean when you are freezing your ass off.

I actually rode both of those recently - really good additions to the Squamish trail network. I need to practice slippery salmon more though... found it hard to maintain speed/flow.

Given the repeated sightings of a black bear on the western flank of Mount Seymour, and his interest in mountain bikers, we're asking people to choose a different spot to ride for a bit here. This bear is accustomed to people, and needs some space during this pre-winter period if he's going to survive his biggest threat; humans. He has most recently been sighted in the area between the top of Hyannis Drive, and the top of TNT; please see Trailforks for the area we're asking that riders avoid. We'll keep people updated via social media and Trailforks as the situation evolves. Please message us, and North Shore Black Bear Society with any sightings. Last time I rode there in March I noticed it felt like Nicoles/Gear Gammer/Lower Snake etc were way faster than I remember from years past, and yeah lots of hikers/dog walkers (dunno why you'd want to hike up bermy bike trails). Asking for conflict with that mix.

Does anyone have any current info on trail conditions on the Sunshine coast we are looking at heading over next weekend but are worried snow levels may be too low to warrant the drive. In the past we have been satisfied if we can get as high as mach chicken.

Finally popped my Chilcotins cherry. Did a float plane drop in Warner Lake to Gun Creek and then a shuttle/pedal up Taylor Creek through Camel Pass down High Trail and the Tyaughten Lake trails. Wow, mind is blown, what a place... can't wait to go back. Super sandy and dry on the lower trails, bit better up high.

Kirkford was incredible today. Big berms in all the switchbacks and amazing grip. Best ever conditions. More riders will just make it better so get after it! Bobsled was a little sketchier - especially at the bottom - but still a blast.

On the site you get good descriptions of the trails etc.
The guy who created it did it a few years back and it was great for me getting familiar with the trails in Naramata/Penticton.

Yeah I think with a little bit of research beforehand (on the internet/trailforks) the app could be useful but all the other bike map apps you could literally just pull up to a town, open the app and immediately have a good idea where to start riding.

I had no idea Stupid Grouse runs all the way thru the BP's to the top of 21st at the highway. Great way to finish a ride. Never rode that side of Cypress before.

In the really old day (mid-80's), it was a climbing trail to get us up to the 2nd switchback.

Predator Ridge golf course built a trail from the Golf Course to Ellison so you don't have as long of a drive through Vernon to get there. AND you can have a beer on their patio afterwards!

Related but unrelated:

How much of Seymour outside of the LSCR is Metro Vancouver managing? If you look at the GIS info provided by the District of North Van you can see that there are a number of trails outside of the LSCR that MV is actively managing / dictating what can and cannot be done to them.

For example, Dales Trail (specifically Lower Dales) is outside of the LSCR (CMHC land) yet MV decided that the rock face would be decommissioned among other things.

Another example is Mushroom. Only ~200m out of 1000m of that trail is in the LSCR yet they rebuilt the entire thing. For the most part, that work was welcome.

MV takes responsibility for trails that go into their land. The reason they machined Mushroom was to create better access to the road. Not sure why they didn't continue further.

It would be nice if they would have continued with the machine on Dales Connector. That trail is getting trashed. Also surprised its not getting fixed up for the BCBR.

We hit up Vedder for the first time yesterday and had a blast. Ran into a couple other first timers as well, probably the hype from the enduro race. First lap we did the climb trail which is nicely paced although a bit muddy then Skidder/Terdferg/Ditch Chicken/Electric Lettuce/Mango/Femur. Awesome trails with good speed and flow to them and pretty dry.

Second lap we did the new Blackforest HAM. Loamy goodness at the top but it got quite muddy and slick which caused some crashing and sliding around, probably needs some time to dry out. With how dry the shore and Whistler have been I was surprised at the moisture up that way. The trail is awesome though and was tons of fun even the slick sections. Will be back to ride it dry.

Any locals have any info on trail conditions in either Canmore/Banff or Hinton/Jasper? Have the option to go riding next week for a few days. I've been scanning Trailforks, Bikepirate, and Facebook groups for trail conditions but there isn't much other than that a lot of the higher trails are still covered in snow and ice, and the clear trails are mostly muddy.

There's a loamer trail called no hands no feet that a buddy showed me. Just a little diversion instead of the gravel path up to the gazebo on the demo forest. A fun trail that a riding club named after using it as contest to see if you could ride without putting a foot down or using brakes.

Trails are in decent shape considering it is the middle of winter.
Not much standing water, looks like someone was through there yesterday or today draining puddles.
There are some muddy spots in the usual places.
No new trees down, any that are down are low and have logs or rocks piled on both sides so are ride-able.

Dog walkers are still leaving offerings for the poo fairy.

The new leg of the trail up has a temporary entrance just off Gaglardi Way (and west of the Nicoles).

The remaining leg is supposed to come all the way down to Nicoles, so you won't have to ride on the road at all, but the remaining section won't be done until Spring/Summer 2016.

The new trail is a nice easy climb, and very scenic.

Yes did that today and enjoyed it very much. Thanks again CoB and anyone who was advocating for that to be built.
I guess (hope?) they'll finish that bridge and surface the trail through that muddy area just uphill of said bridge before knocking off for the season.
That "temporary" entrance could be just left there since it connects to the uphill end of the widened "parking" lane on Galardi, instead of decommissioning it upon completion of trail.

Rode R[HTML_REMOVED]R-GSM-Pangor-OB-BP-AA to Lower Severed and Sticks and stones.

Everything was running well and super dry. Lots of snow up at the powerlines but all hard packed and easy to ride. Pangor a little slippery at the top but running excellent. AA was a blast as always though near the top it is beginning so show some wear from all the wet weather.

Most of Cypress is under snow. Riding up BLT turns into a walk near the bottom of Upper Tall Cans and when you get to the top of Upper Tall Cans it's over a foot deep. It's not as deep in the woods so UTC is still mostly rideable if you don't mind the walk up.

I didn't try Wutang or Lower Tall Cans or the other lowest level trails but my guess is that they would be clear (today, Dec 27th).

Oh yeah, also noticed a faint trailbed bearing left and heading downhill at the beginning of Platinum. Any idea what trail this is? I seem to recall a trail named Swiss Army Knife up there, but remember it heading right in the same direction as Platinum? I've also never been able to find Tsuga, if its even worth looking for. Peace!

Tsuga is definitely worth looking for. It's really easy to find too.

I don't see a 2015 thread and 2014 is locked, figured I'd start one for the last month of the year :)

I went down to Galbraith for the first time yesterday to ride with a buddy who was in the Seattle area. Trails are in great shape, barely any mud, no standing water and a bit of frost on some berms in open areas to keep you honest.

We pedaled to the top and did Evolution then back up to Scorpion into Unemployment Line. From there we took 3 Pigs back up and did Pumptrack into Atomic Dog. The quality of these trails is damn impressive, especially the rebuilt lower half of Unemployment Line, wish I had the skills to hit the bigger jump options.

What was really cool is how much bang for your buck you get vert wise, it doesn't feel like the climbs are that bad compared to the shore. We did 15km in just over 2 hours with a snack break, felt like a lot more riding than I would get in on Fromme or Seymour (I'm a slow climber as you can tell). Tons of people were out enjoying the sunny weather, lots of people on DH rigs for the big jumps too.

Got up as high as back pains. Dirt is all time right now, maybe 1cm of snow in a few places but grippy and rideable. 1 tree down on lower indy after a climb and 1 down on dark forest just after econodave comes in. Thats one in a bit of a sketchy high speed spot that could do some damage.

Trails are in decent shape considering all the heavy rain recently.

The singletrack trail above the meadow has some decent size puddles. We drained what we could with no tools.

The Canyon trail section above the meadow has a creek running down it, typical for this time of the year.

There is a clump of 3 huge trees down on one of the trails above Hwy 10, but there is another trail around the windfall towards Hwy 10. (Briarwood trail area)

There is a clump of small trees down above the gravity bowl but there is already a route around them.

There was an orienteering race in there today so the trails were busy.

Fraser Valley Mountain Bikers AssociationJust got word that someone is making unauthorized modifications to Lorax on Bear Mountain. Apparently they are trying to cut in straight lines. This needs to stop, we all love the original design to this trail and the builder isn't happy about these modifications. If you see someone making unauthorized changes to the trail please ask them to stop in the most respectful and kind manner possible. If your interested in building trails we ask that you get into contact with us first so we can steer you in the right direction, provide any guidance, provide supplies and provide any support that might be needed. When we do stuff this way we all win, and we are always looking for enthusiastic people to join our building efforts.

Looks to me like the icon for the South Gibson trail is actually on Skyline?
I've run this trail a few times but never seen anyone riding it. Would be spectacular ride as the views are amazing.

Curious onlookers found within the area restricted by the fire have presented a serious safety concern for fire crews and themselves.

Fire crews and the Sunshine Coast RCMP are asking the public to stay away from the areas south from Mason into Old Minesite Road, East from Halfmoon Crowston and South from Halfmoon Carlson Road, which have been deemed areas of exclusion under the Wildfire Act.

Fire crews have reported seeing several curious members of the public within the immediate area of the fire, which has been restricted to the public. Some are walking into the area; others are riding bicycles or motorbikes and ATVs. Not only are they putting themselves at risk, but the distraction is putting fire crews in danger as well.

What the public needs to know is that the fire crews need to remain focused on the fire, said Sgt. Chubey, Operations NCO for the Sunshine Coast RCMP. This is a very dangerous fire. The crews not only have to fight the fire, but they are watching for falling trees and operating heavy equipment and helicopters in the area. Any distraction can be life-threatening.

Fire crews and the RCMP are requesting that the public stay out of the area. Anyone found within the restricted area could expect to be charged under the Wildfire Act. Additionally, operating motorbikes and ATVs in the area presents an additional fire risk due to the dry conditions, which could lead to additional charges should the act ignite another fire.

April 6 - South Surrey Bike Park

Junk Yard Dog is mainly dry and running well. Caution in a couple of sections as SORCE is rebuilding structure in anticipation of race on Apr 18th.

Dirt jumps are running for small/medium lines but definitely need some love. Hoping to have City in with machine soon.

It is a long process though.

That's actually the reason the trails are punched. In the past, there's been a large amount of inflexibility by park management which has discouraged fairly spontaneous volunteer maintenance. This has contributed greatly to declining trail quality and has also contributed to rogue building in the park (although most building in recent years has been done by hikers, who have cut and continue to cut new lines all over the place).

Ok - Any clue how long the road up to the top takes to ride?

knob gobbler is around 7km from the lower parking lot , squid is around 4km . i rode it several weeks back at night when we had that last cold spell and it was around 40min ride to the trailhead( squidline ) . dress for cold wind my last ride i walked most of the climb the road was soft and the head wind was insane felt like i was pulling my truck up the hill LOL .

Roads have snow, but trails are in good shape. As long as the trail is under the canopy it is good.
Checked out, Somewhere over there, and stuff in crumpit (all good to go). Note hoods took a beating in the last rainstorm - so Somewhere over there is the better option.

As far as loamers… Feel free to ride them. Just be subtle, tread lightly, and remove any dead fall.

Thanks-again Whitehonky. Very thorough and I appreciate every detail. Your descriptions are good and I always know where you are referring to.

I said I wanted to get up their during the storm too. But at least from where I sit, I had a hard time telling when the storm was on and not. It was chaotic and the rain warnings were deceptive. I thought my roof was going to blow off yesterday, so I can imagine how much wood has fallen on the trails. I will bring my saw for then next while and help out.

Very good to hear that the trails dealt with the water so well. Its the long term that is key, right?

One Mile blowdown is completely clear as of today. The leftovers from the dirty hoar are not obvious and tricky. There are also ice patches remaining in all the wrong places. Could be a different story by the weekend.

Didn't see this post till late, sorry. As a general update, the core trails off the east tower were all good to go as of a few weeks ago. I'm not sure on the status of the other tower, will try to get it cleared soon.

Hope you figured er out.. A better place to get to the date conditions etc might be the FB group right here. Theres a lot more activity from locals on there..

Im out of touch with the trails and changes. My riding in loops used to be shuttle heavy. There was a few new trails to climb rose hill, KC park but my xc experience there is pretty low.
What are the fair to mention riding areas there for the pedal crowd? Or is Harper, Jamison, Lolo still the scene? I am up for shuttles but lots of the old guard has moved or moved on so it will probably be a solo pedal.

Rose Valley Lake Loop - tree down on West side of lake, big enough that you would need a bow saw or chain saw. Too big for a folding pocket saw (unless you have one of the large pro arbourist saws).

First hint of a snow line starts around 700m (barely) but you can ride well beyond that. Conditions were nice tonight. Lots of grip and the rain stopped around 9pm with a full moon making an appearance. Rode until 10:30!

finally rode cumberland for the first time this past weekend, went there for our worca board retreat. tons of fun - some new stuff, some very new (not yet done) stuff, some old. nice low-angle terrain makes for effortless climbing and fun brake-less descending, such a nice change from around here. didn't get to the other side of the lake (forbidden plateau), next time. thanks for all the trailwork!

how about that Smallwood/Bigwood area - lower angle pedally kinda stuff?

The Smallwood FSR area is a pretty good bet if you want mostly pedally/xc type riding.

All but one of the trails there are very low angle and I'd prefer to hit them on an XC bike.

The only DH style trail in that network is called Bigwood, which is a super fun, flowy rip. Not a technical or challenging trail but lots of high speed fun regardless, plus the lookout before you drop in is worth the pedal to.

Was out on circuit 8 yesterday , great conditions minus the wasp nest in a log on the climb going sout back to the trail junction of circuit 8 and thompsen.
I got a least 12 stings before i knew what was going on all on my ankles. They were clinging to my socks stinging me repeatedly. Actually felt sick last night and nauseous whicj came to fruition…:(

thanks koss. didn't see this until we were on our way out of town, wasn't us in the white truck

we ran into some locals at the info centre who gave us some tips, and bought a copy of the 2004 map. godey was a real treat, and as you say in fantastic condition. enjoyed the descents (ursa major, ridge trail) to the info centre, too

today we went for an epix xc romp below sugarloaf mtn. honestly can't remember the last time i rode such pure, old school xc: actually riding single track across the countryside. lots of wildflowers, getting lost and humping bikes over fallen pine trees (beginning of wounded knee needs some serious chainsaw love): good fun

given the lack of online info or even a bike shop (as far as i can tell), merritt might not be a great destination for "gotta plan every detail of our trip before we arrive" types, but it was actually pretty refreshing to explore the area relying on little more than word of mouth and an out-of-date map. we rode an incredible variety of trails and had a great time

The Bog is open with some pushing through snow.

The Mice is clear to the Reservoir. Watch for the occasional deadfall as the snow was a bit heavier this winter. Lots of tamarack leaning across the trail in less traveled areas.

Rock Oven is clear all the way, although there is a pretty good washout on the climb.

Snowline is now over 3k' above the lake, and it's melting fast. Kobau should be good to go in about 2 or 3 weeks!

Didn't end up riding Snowden. A friend took us through Beaver Park? Actually some fun stuff in there. Quite a decent set of dirt jumps. We just rode through the centre of the run, as they are way bigger then I am comfortable with.

I jimmy rigged the bridge at the end of Caution on Sunday. It's sitting on some blocks and still locked in up top with the root anchor and at the bottom with the rocks. Shouldn't go anywhere anytime soon.

There are a large number of trees down on Mel's. The windstorm must have been brutal. The west side of the mountain is reasonable, but the east side is a mess. Nicoles managed to be OK except for one or two minor issues.
Was nice to get out for a ride though. It is warming up and in just 5 or 6 more months we should see most of the snow gone.

It wasn't the wind… it was the snowload. Heavy wet snow just overpowering the trees.

Different tree. The one Kevar cut up was after the log ride/gap, but before the rock drop. This one is an alder before the log ride. Unless Kevar got this too. In that case "wicked".

I'm out of town, back to work in Calgary as of yesterday. The trails were all time on Thursday evening. We didn't have any new snow over the weekend so I would assume its good to go. The ol goat(girlfriend) said it was creeping up to 20 today too. There is a fair bit of new blowdown on almost all trails but I would say its good to go. Tacky leaf covered trails! There was a little snow at the very top but nothing considerable. Have a good ride! See previous posts for locations of blowdown.

back at revy this weekend, rode keystone standard sat in blue bird 20+c weather on Sat outstanding trail with perfect conditions, then over to mcp. for a quick lap on dusty beaver to flow down. super fun.

today was a frisby ridge day and I'm still giggling about it…. 12 km of downhill pump track! hehe, we had prime conditions with a sprinkle at the top. groups going up when we were coming down got caught in some bad weather and came down pretty dirty.

i guess timing is everything in revy.

Rode from Langdale up to the top of Hey 103 last night. We were hoping to make it to Porpoise Bay on trails, but caught the ferry too late and daylight was fading fast. Looking forward to another two days.

I've only ridden in Blur River once many years ago. Maybe call the bike rental shop at Mike Wiegle's resort? The people in the bike rental shop should know.

How far of a drive is it Tom. We are all fit experienced riders. We will have dogs though too

From Brewster Lake to the Loveland Bay trailhead is probably a 20min drive. Would be a long road run for the dogs. There is a Forestry Rec site on Campbell Lake about 3km from the Loveland Bay trailhead, but it is pretty popular, not sure what the odds of getting a site there for May long would be like. Gosling Lake and Boot Lake also have rec sites, but only a couple sites per lake, so likely to be filled up I would guess.

bone is 100% clear, had a solid thorough cut back of some growth and most of the long standing stuff close to trail is gone. moar flow

trail of numbers has a few things here and there that could do with being cut and moved for better lines and moar flow, and there's a big fugly tree down halfway at an open pedally section

Went and rode there yesterday, lots of tree debris on the trails but in general all good. Rode Evolution, Mullet into Cheech and Chong, then looped up and over to the AM side and rode Keystone etc back. Keystone etc was pretty muddy in spots but quite rideable in general.

It was my first time riding there and there's some super fun trails.

Given the amount of melting and rain going on, I question this…. But you went and I didn't so…..

I road late in the day and I definitely wouldnt characterize it as dry conditions. The lack of mud on the bike probably says more about absence of dirt on Pipeline. The couple muddy spots at the beginning of the trail were still under snow.

I never made it out again… damned christmas cheer(wine [HTML_REMOVED] the accompanying heavy head the next day)…. still think its good up there (swakum side)… epic proportions is a little known trail above the bench in Merritt… follow the swakum ridge "trail" (road) to the height of land and take the left fork across the cattle guard and look for the gully to the left… its a generally fall-line trail with a couple micro-climbs that spills out on the top road of the bench… i don't know what shape its in right now (blowdown etc) but its a fun rip that i've shredded in the winter before…. if anyone gets out there, let me know how it was! thanks

sat. today we went out and finished up TimeKiller taking out the blowdown and rerouting in spot's where it was just too dangerous.
From above the cabin ,redone, the big bridge in the first clearcut has been meshed,making it way more safer.
In the clearcut the big blowdown has been redone,yes it will get a little more work to buff it but the different group of riders who went through today seems to enjoy it.
I most likely took a lot of life out of my new fvmba chain today when in a big root ball, sparks flew,twice.
Darn, oh well.
KnobGobbler seen the blowdown looked after as well.
Big shout out to Kim (pipegod) for his work,hour after hour he just kept at it.
Mission's big man Eugene,and Reel Athelete's Rick work hard and the Kman ,while sniffling away worked . Seeing the new upper parking area with toilet and Kiosk ,really made me proud, as due to the work of lots of dedicated bikers ,biking just keeps getting better.
A big bunch of trail runners came through as well, all good.
More of those who use our trails ,the more important we grow and continue our love .
Almost Jan and the sun was shining,crazy ,but in a good way.

This morning…

Snowing hard above the power line but nothing sticking until ~the Ned's entrance (even then pretty slushy).

Lots of water on Pingu/Severed. Definitely stick to the armoured trails today.

lower Vic's yesterday. pretty scketchy crossing the ladder bridge above the washout at the bottom, not recommended! And the crossing at Crystal falls was almost up to my waist with faster water than I felt comfortable with.

52 Winter Shore Trails - The best routes for the wet from Wade and others...

ok, but it's been dry and sunny for few days now; if i rode tall cans and pull tab this weekend, would it be a bad thing?

Edit: hit the aforementioned trails today, plus slippery canoe and roach hit (or whatever at the bottom) all prime, little mud no snow. Loving this fall we're having!

Lost lake was good yesterday but very wet today.

October 22nd, and the trails are just getting better. With a total of nearly 50mm of rain this month, the trails are nicely damp for killer traction. Compare this to the roughly 180mm the North Shore has had during the same time, and you'll see why I'm LOVING the riding right now.

However, the alpine is not as good. Rode at 7200' yesterday, and it was pretty sticky with variable snow up to 20cm deep in places.

Forecast for the next week is mainly dry with lots of sun.

Thought I'd drop in and let people know that there was a black bear poking around on Starz last night at around 7:45pm. My wife and I were just starting down when we ran into a rider coming back up. He had just had a standoff with the bear on the right fork, I'm assuming somewhere near the big log ride. Bear had wandered back towards the rest of the trail. We decided to head back down cautiously with all three of us together and didn't see it again.

If you're riding up there around sundown in the next while, especially alone, make sure to make plenty of noise.

Just got back from doing the 2nd peak [HTML_REMOVED] conditions were very good. A little wet in the bush, but once out in the open, the rocks are all dry. I've never done the 3rd or 1st peak…are they easier or tougher than the 2nd? Seems the 1st is the most popular/ busiest.

Came down Shotgun Saturday afternoon to find a drug addict-looking guy looking into the window of my truck. He quickly got into the passenger seat of a waiting light brown Ford Escort station wagon BC plate 161TAC and took off. Police advised.

Just for everyone to keep an eye out and to call 911 for any suspicious activity so the thefts don't start up again like last year.

Thanks for the info. I've emailed Rob at Wilds of Canada with this same query, however I have yet to get a response. I have the phone number, so maybe I'll try that next.

As I understand it, the interior received a below average snowpack this year, so I suspect I should be good to go on the Wakefield Trail for late June. If the road does have snow, can I assume I could hike-a-bike through it and still access the trail? Cheers!

shit they need to build a playground there for kids.. every time i go theres, theres frikkin kids extreme walking and aimlessly wandering around with no parent supervision. just an accident waiting to happen. whats with parents these days, would you let your kid play on the highway? a bike is a vehicle too, dont let your kids play near bike jumps. last time I was there, there was some 12 year old with a 50cc dirt bike zippin around the park and the parking lot, parents somewhere else not paying attention. shit like this will get the place closed, bikes banned, and lead to more stupid motorcycle laws to protect idiots.

Thanks for the wise advice from all of the above. I was very glad I was not dragging a V10 around, as the 4X was perfect. We rode a lot of trails on Fox Mtn with A Flow Daddy being the one of choice. Possibly the most fun I've had on a bike all year right there. Also rode Godspeed and So Long on Desous as well as a few others and again I felt the 4X was still the bike to be on.

All in all, it was a pretty cool place to ride. Some nice gaps, some awesome high speed flow and quite a change from the coast riding. Still prefer the coast, but a change is as good as a holiday.

Rode here for the first time this week. You pretty much summed it up. A Flo is so good I had to go back for a second helping. And with the coast being so wet for so long, a dry trail was just what the doctor ordered. :rocker:

This pic is on the Abyss trail, so cool, we played around on the fault line for a while!

Day 2 Mt Tzouhalem… or, the mountain with the really bad map! However the trails were awesome.

Day 3 Cumberland, we did 4 rides on Cumberland over the course of the weekend (we were a couple blocks away from the main entrance!) I just love this place…

(yeah always a great way to start the ride, falling off your bike before even getting out the gate!!! :lol:)

Day 4, Snowdon Demo Forest, this place was a real gem, a lot of hidden treasures here. Oh and some awesome trail names!

One near the top when you come around the corner (couldn't chug it on my own, but two guys might, not too large around, but long).

The second one is a chainsaw job for the city, sits right at the exit, you can duck under it, but do slow down or else, we'd have to change Nicoles' name to the Decapitator.

rode both areas last monday/tuesday. abyss was really sloppy mud in spots but a blast. Doumont trails were pretty good shape with exception of a few large, deep puddles, you have to stop and portage the bike around, but at least the snow is gone.

I've rode most areas in the last few days. Hartland has scattered snow patches at the top, mostly in the woods. Harbourview has snow at the top of K2 which would lead me to believe there is snow at the Summit. Little snow on the K2 descent. Broom Hill has little to no snow. If you make it up as far as Duncan, Tzou has a fair bit of snow but is clear on the bottom half. Prevost is snowed in.

I'm kinda looking forward to this. I've noticed a fair amount of widow makers ready to topple at the Woodlot. It's never safe bringing them down yourself because they shatter into pieces up top and rain down all around you. Helmet or not, a water logged tree piece weighs a ton and can injure or kill you…. This way the wind can bring em down and we just clean up the mess. Just keep fingers crossed that stunts don't get hit too hard….

Myra Canyon was decent a couple days ago. 100% snow ride, skipped going too high or too steep, but got in a good 1.5 hr XC loop with some fun downhills and maybe 10 minutes of pushing tops.

Rode Burke this morning and the trails were fairly clear all the way down from Triple Crown. The snow line on the road started around that landslide area and was about 6-8" at the top of Triple Crown. Great riding and tons of dirt.

Make the trail the way it was before the tree fell down.

To each there own I suppose.

Fact is that trails evolve. Try and keep everything the same for too long and you'll loose your marbles. Plus, sometimes it's just not feasible - like with Boogieman after the big storm a few years back. There were about 10 or so very large trees down across a bridge. They were just cut out as far a necessary to re-build the bridge. WAY too much effor to drag them away. And, I think the area looks fine with the blowdown surrounding the trail.

will the trails be allowed to be restored once logging is complete?

Will Backdoor, Wasp and Bigguns be impacted by the new road gonig in there?

Like Ewan said, Mission Forestry intends to clear the trails.

2 cutblocks touch Bigguns but do not cross the trail. Wasp will be affected by one of the cutblocks. I think Backdoor is going to be pretty much wiped out, between one of the cutblocks and the road. Basically the road goes right up to the junction and down the start of Wasp.

The map put out by the District doesn't accurately show the location of the trails. That map I posted is one I made by overlaying the cutblocks onto GPSed trails in Google Earth and I think it's much more accurate based on the flagging I have observed on the trails.

omg 5hrs at the info center trails today, sooo awesome..

I'll second that. TMI to Ursa Major, back up TMI to Ridge, then hiked up a fresh line that took us to the top of the grassy meadow ridge, where we adventured for a while, then ripped down Ridge (so awesome) to the visitor centre to grab a samosa, then climbed TMI up to Godey and back to the cars feeling awesome.

Sept. up there also means snow, we were up to the subalpine on Saturday afternoon (off the Yalakom FSR) and got snowed [HTML_REMOVED] hailed on.

yup. rode lick on Sat. Monster hail/snow storm with lighting all around us as we crested the last climb. Blowing a steady 40kph too. it was sunny at Camel not long before this too. Fall in the high mountains is here. Be prepared, make good, SAFE decisions and the Chilcotins are heaven. Do the opposite and well….welcome to hell.

Cool. What trail is the micro lap on for the kiddies?

There is no trail for the "micros", but is instead just a route laid out with cones and markers in and around (but probably not over!) some of the obstacles in the skills park. Laps probably not more than a couple of hundred feet around. We run them for a few minutes or until the kids look red in the face, everyone claps and cheers, then call it a day.

Not really a race as much as a race simulation for kids who haven't had that experience before, to ease them into the concept. Sometimes we only have 1-5 kids for this, but last year with the staging area up around North Road it was a zoo with about 30 of the little suckers zooming around in semi-controlled chaos. Mix of push bikes, training wheels, actual mini-mountain bikes, etc. They all managed to keep clear of each other pretty well, amazingly enough.

The "Youth Short Course" is a bit more challenging heading out along the access road to the far end of Hang Your Hat and then return via singletrack, for either 1 or 2 laps. Easy stuff for lil ripper types, but a bit of work for kids who aren't used to pedaling up hills much.

I cleared a tree out of there this past November using a big ass hand saw. You could probably take out this tree the same way (see, I said you as in not me! I'm delegating!!!!)

Yeah I went at it tonight with my swiss army knife. Didn't work though. :) It's pretty big but I agree that it could be worked into a nice transitional thing with a proper bridge. There's two trees down so maybe one could be used as the donor. I guess my post just volunteered me to go help but I'm not an experienced trail builder so I'll leave that part up to those who know better.

o.k. so just talked to the head trail gnome.

they are going to be starting to buff the course in the next couple of weeks.

the plan is to over the next 5 1/2 weeks to rake the entire course and buff up the yearly problem sections. there will be 80 person hours spent on the plunge alone.

on thursday june 17th there will be a 2 person crew that will rake the entire rip top to bottom.

the rip is close by order of motca from may 19 to june 20 to motorized vehicles. signs will be going up next week to inform people of this order.

the carpenters sons bridge which is listing quite badly to one side is schedualed for replacement over the next couple of weeks with work completed by may 31 ish.

Apart from GG cookies have you ever tried those Italian chocolates BACI. You know, those little nuggets that come with some romantic adage written in four languages. You open the shiny paper, and you see a fine piece of wax paper (on which is printed something like Love gives meaning to an otherwise worthless existence) wrapped around chocolate that has bumps on it that you just know are hazelnuts. Do you ever just know stuff? Anyway, it's kinda like a Love Fortune Cookie, except it's chocolate.

The biggest problem with "Down and Out" is that there is no rock in the area. the switchback are cut back and forth across a big mound of hardpan and gold.

I wprked this trail for 2 summers and had to stop because of other issues in my life, but while working it, I had a bitch of a time finding rock bigger than a baseball. I was bitch rocks up from the pond - one at a time in aback-pack, this gets old quick, I bitch big rocks up to the top switchback for weeks and bearly had enough rocks to make the 5 foot ramp at the big stump.

I think NSMBA needs to set up another trail day here, and they need to get some Rock delivered somehow.

the Boys on NH bitched rocks from the road all the way down that trail to the bottom. they walked a wheelbarrow full down the trail for days, it was nuts. To do this all the way to the switchbacks would be insane,

the other problem here is that the hardpan/gold the swichbacks are cut into is slowly sinking down the hill. the rocks and logs I put in 3 years ago are now up in the air in some places.

this trail needs a ton of attention, and its way more work than one person can handle.

I'll take a look at the drainage we put in, but we nee d a solution for Rock supply here,

Can anyone help with a zipline to shuttle rocks from above?

about 6" of snow at the entrance to Triple Crown today, but nothing in the trails. Pretty good condition except the lower trails are beat from people riding through the mud holes all winter long.

Cory wanted to piss on your truck after seeing you shuttling on Sat. I told him it was something Synchro would do, so he went for the heater air intake instead…

Really? I was up there between 12-3pm and it was still in that same spot before quickhit (in that fork in the road).

yup I glued the ends on, it's been on my list of things to do to put a longer pipe on to send the weight further to the ends, will try to get to it soon. I can't remember if we used water, but should use window washing fluid or antifreeze as it shouldn't evaporate like pure water and with the ends glued there won't be any leakage into the ground…. even though it's an old dump site ;) Glad you're enjoying it! I had a chat with a neighbour, who is a player in the DNV the other day. Here's a post based on the conversation:

Anyways, he got visibly upset when I mentioned the "new access road". According to him, he has no idea why anybody thinks it is going to be a road. As far as he knows, the plan has been to create a 1m wide trail. Purpose: add another UP trail and spread the parking around a bit.

Beginning of Corkscrew was difficult yesterday with slush/ice/greasy wood. Ned's [HTML_REMOVED] Bottlecap were good…mostly bare. Should be less snow now with the temp. rise.

Yup, it was already melting quite steadily on Saturday at the Corkscrew Parking lot but there was still quite a bit of snow on Corkscrew all the way down to the Mushroom site

The frost is really coming out of the ground right now, anything above the Juniper subdivision is really muddy. Pedalled up to the Rio trailhead this morning, not overly pleasant right now.Three days ago it was fine. The Shuttle road in is pretty muddy in some sections, please keep to the road though, do not drive around the mud holes! The grass has a layer of frost under it and is really fragile right now. Top section of Rio is pretty wet and with the colder weather in the forecast I would suspect it will not be drying up anytime soon. Props to who has been doing the maintenance up there your work looks great and is very much appreciated!

all seasonal closures have now been lifted.

that being said…some of the trails are not equipped to handle heavy rainfall and have been completely thrashed from riders over the winter. please respect gearjammer, uppercut and lower snake and do not ride them after heavy rain. thanks :)

did the dh run yesterday, it was good, slow in spots but a good run.. sessioned a few of the hits. still havent gotten the balls to do the double hit gaps, need to trail someone in for speed..

kudoos to whoever put the time and effort to fixing the bear mtn dh run.. i hadnt ridden it since mid summer last year when i decided to make whistler bike park my home for the remaining season.. its much better. kudoos..

Shifted a downed tree the other day off the trail (during the lull in the rain there, and things had a chance to dry out), and some friend mentioned riding today (at South Surrey, which seems a little dryer) as it got dark and a hearing tree come down near them… a little extra endorphin in that ride. ;)

2. Ride across a North Shore mountain. It's harder than it sounds and if getting some exercise is a priority it's tons of fun. Mount Seymour has a great trail that will challenge your technical ability while giving you some ups and a couple downs. It's called Bridle Path and starts just off of Old Buck trail, which starts at the parking lot beside Seymour Road on the way to the golf course. Doing this ride as an "out and back" is good or you can also climb Old Buck, turn left at Baden Powell, go to the top of Neds Atomic Dustbin, ride down that and then turn left and ride back along Bridle Path to the mall/parking.

good advice. i'm building a fully rigid winter bike for delta, abby, etc. and will reacquaint myself with both of the north shore's bp's. props!

this thread has become poisonous. haha!!

sustained steep sections on any trail will require braking. slower riders will have to brake more, though that doesn't necessarily mean they cause more damage. sam hill wannabe's roosting corners and "keeping it loose" can do more harm than someone creeping down the trail.

well designed trails with open corners, good line of sight, speed control by turning the trail uphill as needed, etc will last longer longer. squamish's first one is coming this spring..

never remove horizontal logs/roots/rocks, they are a trail's best friend.
let's leave it at that.

My gratitude was in earnest, not sarcasm. This info really helps me see the trails from the point of view of a builder. Maybe if I got off my lazy arse and did more volly days I'd be able to figure these things out a little quicker.

These aren't hornets - they're yellow jacket wasps. Hornets are much bigger with a meaner sting but generally not as aggressive (unless you disturb the nest). Plenty of yellow jacket hotspots all over the shore right now.

Sometimes you get lucky riding over a known hotspot other times you get nailed without warning. My advice, ride first keep the flow going then the guy behind gets nailed!

Dry and dusty everywhere. We did however do some serious trimming on all of godie recently and it is in super good shape. All of iron is still good for shreds..just space out a bit more and wear goggles!

Godie Creek was stunning earlier this week, particularly after the rain. Thanks for such sweet trails.

That log is still totally rideable, the hole is kind of filled with rock and dirt, but you can still ride the wood right beside the hole, you will be fine.

no it was probably the worst thing that could have happened. they seemed to have brought in a lot of fresh dirt and saturday was fun but brutal up there, sunday the weather was good but still super wet according to a guy on the ferry. as long as they rebuild it this week it should be good

that's what I was saying - if they jump on it now and rake and tamp like SOB's the rain will have consolidated all the new dirt and things will be golden. I'll be heading up Wednesday pm and will gladly report back.

not the big gapper jumps. They left the rest, which honestly didn't need a lot of work, and ended up rebuilding the big #5 gappers. Nice work too.

I couldn't make the trail day, but I don't feel to guilty about it. Once every few weeks I'll bring in a hammer and nails, and repair the odd damage. Been doing that for a few years now. The article is pretty negative though. I rode the DJ's and stunts on friday night (with a hammer and nails in my camelback) and the stunts were in great shape. I spent maybe ten minutes fixing some rungs, and cutting down some overgrowth.

Regardless, I think a family membership is in order. I'd like to spend some time cleaning up the pump track so my kids can practice there.

The Ring Creek Rip is clear of blowdown and hangers as of today…

About half way through "The Fartherside" there is a new section of trail built, adding ~200m of singletrack to the course. Hard to miss by now, it's packing in nice.

The biggest problem right now is the empty space where the Mashiter Trail Bridge used to be. This should be good to go and all sorted by this coming Sunday. Once it's been sorted The Corners to Rollercoaster will be mint.

Course condition concerns/ideas are welcome.

I understand that some of you may already have heard that the Mashiter Bridge connecting Alice Lake to Garibaldi Highlands (the one that goes over top of the pipe line and has the chain link fence along side of it) has been damaged and the remaining parts of the bridge have been deemed unsafe. Effective immediately the bridge is closed. We are working on a solution to this problem to replace this important community linkage ASAP. I will get you some more details on when it will be reopen in the next's few days. I appreciate your patience and understanding.

what a difference a couple of weeks makes..

almost ALL the snow is gone from the trail.. i think the beginning 150feet maybe have patchwork snow on the ground and some deadfall..

otherwise the remainder of teh trail is dry/clean and in primo shape…

We pushed up clearing all the deadfall on the trail. The trail is clear of snow and all deadfall now. I suspect it will be a few more weeks of mild weather before the road is free of snow.

Ended up doing Old Buck, turning left on Baden Powel, then deciding we weren't going to do Ned's so turning right up Incline (eugh) to the Power Lines, to the road, up the road to Corkscrew, Salvation Pingu, Severed. Good times. Off to work tired and happy…

Envious.

Going up Incline must have been fun, but going straight up Old Buck probably wouldn't be much better apart from being more direct to the road.

It was around 6 pm tuesday night. The guy who saw them said they were coming down the more open section of the west side of bloggy. He was pushing up and since he had no small dog or DaveM he cut it short and rode out. The funny thing is he said the cubs were as big as my female sheppard so mom must be BIG!

That is right around the forensic testing area. If the pigs are out that may have brought them down to that area.

Quarry Court is a straight line that is used a lot by hikers. It is quite steep and has had a trail nazi working it in the past (lots of debris and deadfall deliberatley placed across the trail). Don't bother. Skull is a lovely little trail, especially Lower Skull.

lots of snow at the top of goldmine, not much elsewhere.

as in years' past, the woodlot trails were shitbagged this winter so the user experience is no longer what it used to be, as there's only so much wet / rain riding that those trails can handle.

so, yeah, aside from all that, everything's pretty much accessible and rideable. there are lots of holes in the trails and lots of ruts and everyone's going to have to start riding rough stuff again.

Finally…it's starting to open up.

Knox is 100%. Smith Creek is open to #7. Postill has about 8" at the top, but that should be all gone in a week. Lower Gillard should be good in about a week, upper in a few more. Powers needs at least 2 weeks, but should be good by the end of the month.

Hiked up 5th today. Moved some branches on my way up but the trail was pretty much clear. There are 2 small trees down across the trail right after the step-up but that's about it. The top 1/3 is snowy and the rest is wet and soggy. It was snowing pretty good at 3 this afternoon. Winter isn't done yet…

How a little time will change things….a week ago friday, the trails were actually a bit dusty and the riding, superb. Wanted to ride yesterday but there was simply too much snow. Headed up again today because it was so warm today. The road up was passable with lots of water running down the surface of the road but most of the snow was gone up to just past Dilemma (so you could manage to that point with 2 wheel drive). At Hidden Pleasures the mud was impressive and there was about 3 inches of snow. Just around the corner heading up to 2 Cents, the amount of snow on the road was much deeper and the only tracks beyond this point were from a quad that managed to struggle up past this point. I perservered with my hump up the road and made it by slogging through nearly a foot of snow to be the first down 2 cents. The trail was a fun ride but definitely very wet and sketchy. Once on Hiddden Pleasures the snow gave way the wicked nasty mud which only got worse was on to TerdFerg. Things improved on Dilemma which was in reasonable shape. I would give the ride a pass for now as all trails are simply too wet to hold up well to any volume of riders.

Time to grab the saw and go do some trail work.

Good thread here. I had a similar experiance as i was riding down shotgun, a few riders and there dog were sitting in the middle of the trail before the clearcut and i came up the hill after that bridge over the creek crankin my ass off, and there I see them just sitting there in the middle of the trail and there dog lying across the trail. As I see a gap off to the side to get around I maintain my speed and one of the guys says "slow down bud"as I rip by. Than im thinkin to myself what the fuck hes the one that should get the hell off the trail you dont take breaks on the trail when your hiking up and riders are ripping down and you especially dont have your dog lying there on the trail. Some people are just so stupid.

Rode up on Friday…….the mud was positively impressive. The new, unpacked roadowork, goodly amount of rain, thawing snow and truck traffic = spectacular mud. Once onto the trails, Skidder/Hidden Pleasures was muddier than I've seen it in a while and the 'wheel suck' meant almost coming up short on a few things I never give any thought to. Nice little adrenalin surge.

Just hiked down today from BP so not very high up….1-3 feet of snow on the entire trail…small trees/branches everywhere…we moved some but need a chainsaw or wait for more of a melt to move others, it's gonna need a good trail day to get it cleaned up so I'll be looking out for when those start as I'm sure it's the same for as lot of trails…maybe the last 50 feet had no snow on it …:crybaby:

I was up at Mt Seymour yesterday, the snow banks at the Mushroom corner are about 4 feet high (a couple of feet above the concrete median).

Most definately. I believe its a causeal event open for all skill levels, as we ride up, differnt groups can split off and do what ever they are comfortable doing.

I was up on Big Sumas two weeks ago and met two Abbotsford Policemen patrolling in their 4X4. He indicated to me that the next day the Sumas area was coming under their jurisdiction and they would be patrolling regularly. I told them that there presence was welcome given the amount of litter that we see up there.

I think we need to alert the Abbotsford cops to this destruction and trespass. Also, we should keep them updated on any license plate numbers we see of quad operators on Sumas so they will know just who is up there, good or bad. Let's nip this in the bud, if possible.

If it hasn't already been done somebody should put some yellow tape between a couple trees at the beginning of the trail to keep people off of it.

It will be taped off by the weekend.

I know, I know, don't ride CBC in the rain… But I rode it today and it was in great shape. A couple of puddles (that if fixed would make the trail rock solid). And the rest of the trail was in great shape. In fact the rocks were so clean that it was as grippy as summer. To be honest it was on much better shape than lowers trails ( boogie). It makes me question the true logic of closing cbc… Agreement with parks? Flexing nsmba muscle? Saving a trail to ensure it lasts?

Might be one or more of these reasons. If there is no parks agreement, I think that better than arbitrary blanket closing g periods, perhaps only closing for snow. Otherwise the trail should be good to go.

The bridge across the gulley at the bottom of Krinkum is down. Some big trees were felled and one landed square on the bridge. It looks like a new bridge is in the works as there's lots of lumber there. You can still get across by walking up the bank a bit.

Hmmm…that's shitty. Definitely puts a damper in our plans as Seven was the highlight of the trip. Silverstar, Nelson, Rossland singletrack and Baldface were among a few other choices.

Good news dood. A lighter bike with less travel will jump easier, partly because the less travel will not suck up the lip of the jump so much. I've had a right laugh on CIU on my hardtail for that very reason.

I agree with a point above about trying to style it up as a way of keeping control of the bike. Unfortunately this is as stylish as I get :lol:

Any one going to be up Whistler to show me some pointers riding A Line.
I have done it twice last year but deciding to improve on Crank It Up before trying A Line again just so as not to slow down the flow of others……call it respect.

I am a strong Intermediate and just new to catching air…I find I come out of the saddle and can hear my shoes clap against the pedals when I land….. not to mention not sure how much pump in the take off….suggestions.

Ill be the old guy on the white RMX with front fender.

I pre-rode the Test yesterday and the conditions were perfect. No snow. Dry with almost no standing water. 9 mile is still steep. The plunge was very fun. Not sure if the new single track climb is faster than the old scramble up the hill? It seems like you will have a choice.

Rode Harper from the bottom parking lot to the top of the ski lift last night, conditions are excellent. One little patch of snow just past the top parking area about 100 feet long other the that the trail up is good. Some water right near the top before the last climb to the top of the ski lift but other then that it is super tacky. Trail down is tacky with no mud. Road up has a little mud here and there but just surface mud, vehicles won't tear things up at all. Conditions couldn't really be much better. There is one section of trail that is gone from the logging, the line that is just to the east of the hurt'n albertan has been clearcut but it is a small section. Need a couple of guys with some rakes to work in a new trail through this section, too many spoke/derailleur busters everywhere right now. The trail section affected is only about 100 metres or so long (just before the fire pit).

Horse groups do no work whatsoever in Mission. In fact the only multi use trails are the city built ones ie Bear and the small access trail on red that gets you past the rod and gun club. They are not supposed to be on any other trails, just the roads. Feel free to mention this to them. In fact the city workers wanted us to tell them such and forward the city contact info to them. We will probably end up building horse proof bridges to prevent access to certain non-horse trails.

This information is strictly Ewan's opinion or a misinterpretation of a conversation he had with Mission BUT it is not backed by the District of Mission or the Mission Forestry Department. I have received several emails from them regarding Ewans post and here are some excerpts from them. Please respect ALL the user groups or we could jeopardize us being one of them. Myself, the FVMBA and Mission are working through the politics involved in trail building and accomodating the cities needs and ours. We are all aware of the impact (damage) caused by the different users groups but until everybody gets their own "private" area we must be tolerant.

We have several multi-use trails [HTML_REMOVED]#8211; all trails on Bear and Red are to accommodate horses, hikers AND mt. bikes, with the exception of the Red Mt. loop trail at 1.2 km on the Red Mountain lower logging road. This trail is intended and signed for Hiking Only, due to the environmentally sensitive areas and old growth forests.

We also have multi-use trails of Campbell Street in Steelhead [HTML_REMOVED]#8211; which have been built to accommodate all users.

Any and all trails on Bear and Red, must be built and maintained to accommodate all three user groups. Therefore, nothing should be built to purposefully prevent access by one or more user groups.

Also, I just wanted to add that we have two horse groups who do also do a lot of volunteer maintenance as well over the past several years [HTML_REMOVED]#8211; they haven[HTML_REMOVED]#8217;t been recently active in the past 6 months, but they do contribute as well. Of course, they aren[HTML_REMOVED]#8217;t using the mountains in the same numbers as mt. bikes [HTML_REMOVED]#8211; so it would be fair to say they do equal the work, but the ones that do come out, do help.

Yes, we do understand that the hoofs impact into the trail surface at certain times of year, leaving large holes. But all users have an impact (as bike incising event on the upper slopes of the Bear Mt. downhill course). And hikers also avoiding mudholes etc [HTML_REMOVED]#8211; they tend to shortcut and make wider berths around mucky areas. As long as all users are respectful of each other, there is no point in pointing fingers at each group. We feel that no matter who you are [HTML_REMOVED]#8211; you make an impact on the environment, no matter how hard you try not to. We also hope that through education, that trail users avoid certain trails at certain times of year, particularly if they know the negative impact they area causing, but not everyone is as respectful as we hope.
