The problem with the smaller, less populated parks here, is that they tend to close shortly after the kids go back to school. Whistler has the draw, capital, and location (coastal), to stay open much later. The only non-whistler place I can think of that could be open is Coast Gravity Park on the Sunshine Coast. It's much smaller, very chill vibe, and has vehicle uplift as opposed to chairlifts.

Slowly more trails are opening and some work is being done to the blown out trails. I'm starting to know and enjoy the mountain. Still pretty rough conditions overall, the key seems to be to dial things back and ride the trails at 70% or so, let the bike do its work and go after flow rather than speed. That way my body can handle enough laps to make it worth the drive up.

So far it's been super quiet every time I've gone, I like it but I wonder if they actually make any money.

I usually have a blast at CGP as it's the only game in town during some parts of the year when I want to ride DH and WBP is closed. The vibe is always great, last time I was there I got to watch (and shuttle with) some Red Bull pros riding on one of the days too. It is what it is - if I didn't want to ride DH stuff there's a lot of incredible trails nearby.
Up against WBP and Sun Peaks it pales but I do enjoy the sum of the parts.
I also agree - Huggies all the way down to Porpoise is a great way to wrap it all up.

You should be fine. I haven’t done it but see lots of people do it. Unfortunately the trails down cross private land (and they are opposed to bikes) and haven’t been maintained for a while.

Rather than leaving from the village leave from the top of the chairlift and find your way into the Sovereign network to ride Upper Dagamal, dagamal, Rock is the new berm. Kills 2km on the road and puts you on some good tech trails. If you have time hit up Hammered Cow, though after a dray at the park that can be a bit much

Be aware of cars coming down. Some bikers don’t seem to care and take up the whole road, annoying the drivers.

Only got 3days on the Seasons Pass this time…went hot doggin' into the Ain't No Scrubs step-up(my own brain fart)…went waaay too big and bailed 'wrong' back on july21….Whambulance ride and the whole nine.
Will finally try a bike ride soon. Takes a bit out of a 45yr old…scorpion and wrap around a tree about as hard as a guy can without actually breaking his back!

The city and local club have done some excellent work on Knox. I used to live at the base and it always made for a great couple laps.

I would recommend a few rides on the mountain if your in town anyway, finish off with a spin out Paul's Tomb and a quick dip in the lake. A shuttle would take longer to get down than riding down but a great way to get a bunch of laps in quickly.

Smith Creek is a must hit for everyone in my opinion, it is worth the trip across the bridge. Crawford is great but I don't like it in the summer as it is wide open in the sun for lots of the climb up, better in spring and fall.

Rode silver star yesterday. Total hero dirt after the thunder shower the day prior. Pipe dream is definitely running better. As noted, many of the lips and jumps just feel better.

On riding in the area… Can't go wrong with Kal Park, always nice to finish with a swim. There are trails at sovereign just before silver star, which is nice to escape the heat. I haven't ridden Noble yet but hear good things. Ellison is certainly tamer but I still enjoy it and there is a connector trail to Predator Ridge to grab a pint mid ride.

If your heading down to Kelowna I cannot recommend Smith Creek enough, it's a must hit in my books.

Pretty sure Silver star now has a storage option at their on site shop, give them a call to verify. The whole mountain is pretty pro-mountain biking so you shouldn't have an issue. Would be a good option if you want to leave the mountain to hit the lakes.

i've been to les deux alpes and to la grave. l2a mostly has tracks with banked curves, but it closed some parts since i've been there. the run down to venosc is nice, in total you can ride there from 3200m down to the valley of venosc at 900m

la grave has very steep hiking paths, some with lots of exposure. also one of the craziest gondola of the alpes ;)

Great update Cam!

I rode the XC trails a couple times last year and enjoyed them but did find the signage to be lacking causing some backtracking- better signage is definitely welcome. It is a great way to escape the heat of the valley and I see myself utilizing them more this year.

As I was reading your post on the XC trails what kept running through my head was "where can I possibly store one of my bikes while I use the other" and then BAM! you throw down the guantlet. Awesome you guys see this as a concern for multi-steed riders, glad I now don't have to choose only one bike to ride up at the resort.

I'm looking forward to the next installment of Jedi Mind tricks and the XC teasers you have been sharing. Can't wait for the trails to open.

I know this doesn't help the Surrey folks, but Jay Hoots is currently building a new pump track and DJ facility at Garden City Park right at Garden City and Granville. Pretty good that a muni is supporting such a centrally located and highly visible location. Oh yeah, and paying for it….

I used to work up on Sun Peaks, and the Heffley Inn was the most unfriendly place on the hill. I am sorry that you got screwed over by those folk. They are owner by a German Tour company as you have noted, and it really shows that they only want to cater to their own tour clients. Almost every other place up there is alot better. I like the Cahilty as well.

Yes, this is great news. Interriver and Burnaby, now Surrey.

It would be great to see something like this in Vancouver. It would be fantastic for younger kids to have somewhere to ride and practice without having to get to the shore or travel to Burnaby or Surrey.

Not sure why this thread got resurrected 1 yr later. In Vancouver, the wooded area at Vanier Park just south of the dirt jumps is a great candidate. There is an area with crappy drainage, but just south of that would be perfect.

Heaven is an (indoor) bike park. The weather has absolutely sucked for months.
For us, it's Joyride 150.
It's a 30-40 minute drive from downtown T.O.

I hadn't been there in a couple years and have since committed to once a week (more or less) visits since my birthday in December.
World Class pumptrack - 3 yr olds pedal the whole thing, intermediate riders pump through it (coasting through the corners) and a whole bunch of skilled riders absolutely rip it.
Never mind the awesome progressive jump lines (and over 100,000 sq/ft of everything else).

If I was the first time through, I would suggest (just like my first visit to WBP or Silverstar) a lesson from a pro, a bargain at 30$/hr) from one of the staff.
I was ready for one myself today and asked at the desk if anyone was available for a teaching session . . .
it was a quiet day and more staff weren't showing up for a while so dude said no.
I was kinda hoping Drew Bezanson (sitting there, behind the desk, Red Bull helmet on, texting someone) would offer up a lesson . . . lol.
The Globe has recently run an article about Joyride with Drew as the host.
He mentioned in the article that he had recently taught a 47yr old to back flip.

The agricultural areas and environs of BC (Okanagan, Fraser Delta, Fraser Valley) are full of the of post-WWII Dutch immigrants and their descendants. Perhaps the most famous/infamous is a guy named Wilhelmus Vander Zalm. The Netherlands was devastated by the War and many left out of desperation. The Dutch also felt a sense of kinship with Canada … their royal family spent most of WWII in exile in Canada and Canadian forces played a big role in the liberation of the Netherlands from Nazi occupation.

There are pockets of Dutch ppl everywhere. Tonnes in the Fraser Valley, about a zillion across the border in Lynden. Like many immigrants they tended to settle together. My Oma and Opa settled in Alberta (there are lots of Dutch in Rocky Mountain House, Lacome etc).There are still a fair number of Dutch coming over as farms are comparatively cheap.

Just back from the trip and I gotta say sun peaks was pretty awesome! Fast tech and not too many wtfbbqcliff moments made the trip pretty enjoyable. Even gave the first rocky rock roll/drop on insanity one a shot and survived it with a blown tire :trinity:.

I would agree that silver star is pretty fun. Their blue trails are pretty fun, so they work really well if your group is of varied skill levels. I would think the aurums are pretty decent to rent too. The village can be a little lacking though in comparison to other mtns.

If Boer mtn was in the Fraser valley there would have been a full campsite/full overflow and definatley [HTML_REMOVED] a hundred riders

Instead there was [HTML_REMOVED] a doz and I actualy knew them all from skiing cuz its just such a long ways up here which is why I never worry about the skiing or biking getting busy up here, I will be dead by the time it gets crazy if that ever happens and so while I tell everyone to move up to settle the place and have a much better life for the $ than in the fraser valley I honestly think they are all afraid of the great white north or SFT and will never actualy come … so just visit and bring $$$

I used to live in Peeg/hung out/worked at a shop and I dunno whats happening over there, I have heard that whomever hands out the govy $ in PeeG wasn't giving out the bucks like the locals guys in BL/Smithers but I don't know why?

The bugs weren't too bad last weekend but in fact bugs have not been bad this year, later in the summer is better in fact if you can swing September the bugs and all signs of life will be gone for sure except on the river cuz telkwa in september is seriously world class steelhead fishing …people come and spend mega$$$$$$

Heading to Silver Star this weekend with friends who are riding the park. I've been off the big bike for 7 weeks after nasty sprained wrist and am thinking that first ride back out probably shouldn't be banging out laps at a bike park. Is there any good xc or all mtn riding easily accessible from the resort area (was thinking about bringing a smaller bike and riding solo)?

If there is no good xc or all mtn access from base of resort I would also be willing to drive to find dirt. Preference would be close to the mountain though.

Hey thanks for the reply! I remembered the guys in BIKE magazine raving about the Mackenzie river trail so that's where we'll mostl likely end up. One start, 3-4 dirfferent directions!

The MRT is definitely worth doing. It's also a great long ride for a group of mixed skill levels. Everybody in our group had a great time. Also cool waterfalls and swimming holes.

In Bend, we did one guided shuttle day with Cog Wild and then rode back to Bend and also a day where we pedalled from Bend and made our own loops. Both were great but the guide and shuttle was definitely better. More time hitting the goods!

It's kind of funny how RCR thinks ski/bike jumping is unsafe and has essentially banned it from the hill. And then they go and freaking build this stuff way up in a bunch of trees. And yes, you are completely on point about the sketchy moments. I feel that it's way more dangerous now that they've half removed the jumps than if they just had continued to maintain them.

Has RCR really changed things up this year? Anyone know?

I guess in a way they have. I'm just thankfull this year they have made obvious improvements to the hill. Hopully this carries on well into the future. And, as far as I know, there's still technicaly no jumping allowed on bikes.

side of the road works well…

at sunpeaks we camp in the free camping past sunpeaks. they are logging roads and taking a trailer down some of them would be difficult but doable, just be careful what time of year because the bugs will eat you alive back there.

At silverstar we've camped on the side of the road, other than that your looking at a 30 minute drive to get anywhere free and nice. We camp around the corner towards lumby off some forest service roads… nice place with a creek running by the camp but like i said, its a bit of a drive.

if you ride both mountains in a weekend camp around falkland, its about the half way point. in the center of town head by the pub head up the chase falkland road for about 20 minutes, you'll come across 2 or 3 campgrounds and a few places along the creak you can camp.

I, unfortunately, got half a run in on cypress before shattering my wrist. Half my fault, half an incorrect sign.

Remember: Go half-speed your first time on a new trail, you can always take the lift back up for a second rip, but you can't unbreak your limbs.

Wow.. you guy's still have snow.

Only reason MSA is closed to skiing is not enough people go this time of year otherwise they could ski all month of May easy. Their supposed to open the DH trails May 28th but…..!!!

There was a story up on this site a year or two ago about one of the guys busting a bike thief in Whistler at the bike park. Definitely a problem.

Craig Appleyard. Hopefully he's fertilizer for a outdoor grow op these days.

Whis is a problem. SS and SP not so much. I still would never leave my unattended though.

Zero lines and zero traffic to and from Whistler on both Thursday and Sunday.

I was actually kinda shocked at the lack of people in Whistler.

Same trend last year. There were never any of the massive lines like there used to be.
